Hap was born in Manistique, Mich., to Arthur and Esther Nelson and spent all of his time in Manistique until moving with his wife, Charlene Eck Nelson and their three children, Billy, Denyse and Debbie to San Jose in 1960. While in Manistique, Hap worked at the paper mill. Ralph served his country, enlisting in the Merchant Marines at age 17 and then later in the Army.
After moving to San Jose, Hap worked for General Motors until his retirement. Hap was a great guitar player and could play most any instrument he picked up, passing on his love of music to his grandchildren, Mandy, Randy, Michael, Melissa, Michelle, Matthew, Alex, Lindsay, David and Leslie. Hap also has one great-granddaughter, Leila.
Hap was preceded in death by his siblings, Roy (Vivian); twin, Bob (Marian); and twin sisters, Jean and Jane.
