Emeralds compete in fifth state appearance

GRAND RAPIDS – The Emerald competitive cheer squad saw the best of the best while competing in their fifth appearance at state finals over the weekend in Grand Rapids.

Eight teams from Regional 7 and 8 Finals in Division 4 arrived at the Delta Plex on Saturday with their sights set on taking the state title.

Also included in the competition was Manistique’s Upper Peninsula rival, Munising.

Adding excitement to the event, just two points separated first and second place finishes this year. After three rounds of competition, Michigan Center took the title for the fourth year in a row with a score of 745.12. Merrill fell into second with 743.12.

Manistique improved their final score at this year’s appearance posting a 705.18, compared to 698.22 achieved in 2013. Unfortunately, the improvement only advanced them to a seventh place finish.

Munising finished in eighth with 700.80.

Championship coverage will be available for viewing on the MHSAA. tv website.
