Harry Toennessen Harry Toennessen Emeralds No. 1 in the Mid-Pen conference

IRON MOUNTAIN – Just over halfway through their 2013 season, the Emerald varsity volleyball team holds the number one slot for the Mid Peninsula Conference.

On the road last Thursday in Iron Mountain, what should have been three and out, turned into a five match series. Manistique finished the night going 3-2 (25-11, 25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 16-14).

The win puts Manistique 5-1 in the conference.

Manistique stats:

Hailey Hoholik - 7 kills, 4 aces, 3 digs; Breanna Bosanic - 1 dig; Morgan Kangas - 8 digs, 1 ace; Machaela Hinkson - 3 kills; Lexi Carlson - 2 blocks, 1 kill, 1 dig; Sydney Chartier - 4 aces, 3 digs, 5 kills; Leah Cook - 3 digs, 3 aces; Maggie Morrison - 16 kills, 3 aces, 11 digs.

The Emeralds are at home Oct. 7 against Ishpeming.

Toennessen ‘Top Gun’ at pistol club shoot

MANISTIQUE – Area resident Harry Toennessen emerged as the “Top Gun” in the annual one day Club Championship shoot at the Manistique Rifle and Pistol Club. The “Top Gun” trophy goes to the shooter having the best combined total after shooting at 50 skeet and 50 five stand targets.

Other winners included: Gary Finch, class “A” five stand champion, followed by Cad LaFave and Dave Blahnik. Kevin Demers took five stand class “B” honors, with Russ Johnson and Dudsie Johnson rounding out the top three places.

Skeet Champion Hart Stuehmer bested Cad LaFave and Bill Fries in class “A”, while Mike Glass, Bill Banzhaf, and Jim LaBreck were the “B” class top three trophy winners.

The club house and shotgun ranges are open Wednesday afternoons, while the outdoor rifle, pistol, and archery ranges are always open. The club is located north of Manistique on Hwy 94.
